Protists by nature are unicellular and can be either autotrophic or heterotrophic, like eubacteria. The heterotrophic protists are typically referred to as zooplankton, which come in forms of foraminiferans, radiolarans, and cilliates. Autotrophic protists are referred to as phytoplankton and come in forms including dinoflagellates, coccolithophores, diatoms, and brown algae. We will be studying the latter of the two.
